The Department of History, established in 1966 and affiliated with the University of Madras, is committed to fostering academic excellence by enabling students to analyze and interpret major historical issues while developing strong research skills. The department offers TNPSC coaching classes and maintains a well-equipped Heritage Museum that preserves rare artefacts representing rich cultural traditions. It has consistently achieved University ranks since its inception, reflecting its dedication to quality education. In its pursuit of social awareness and inclusivity, the department established a Women’s Studies Centre on 2nd March 2016 to promote women’s rights and empowerment. The Heritage Museum received distinguished recognition when A. P. J. Abdul Kalam visited it in 2009. The department has further expanded its academic scope by introducing research programmes, including the M.A. History postgraduate degree initiated in 2020, with faculty actively guiding Ph.D. scholars. Additionally, the department introduced a Postgraduate Diploma in Aviation Management in 2021, a specialized programme designed to equip students with comprehensive knowledge of airport management, airline operations, aviation safety, and related domains. Through internships, case studies, and industry interactions, the programme provides practical exposure, preparing graduates for dynamic and rewarding careers in the aviation industry.
